Swiss machine builder active in Ghana's cocoa sector
Ghana, along with Côte d'Ivoire, is an important producer of cocoa. Together, the two countries produce more than half of the world's cocoa. So far, the valuable raw material has mainly been exported unprocessed. However, the important sector is attracting increased investment to build local processing capacity. The company West African Mills currently has a processing capacity of 250 tonnes per day. Now, about US$ 5 million is to be invested in upgrading the plant for the production of cocoa liquor and cocoa butter. The products are mainly destined for export to Europe and the USA.
The Ghanaian cocoa regulatory authority - COCOBOD - has reached an agreement with the Swiss engineering company Buhler: local cocoa processing and value-adding capacities are to be built in Ghana with the help of training, product development and technology consulting. Bühler is one of the world's leading companies in chocolate technology and offers complete solutions for processing cocoa beans into high-quality chocolate masses.
