Ethiopia pushes ahead with privatisation of the sugar industry

With the establishment of the Ethiopian Sugar Industry Group (ESIG) in March 2022, Ethiopia's government wants to finally get the crippled state sugar industry going. The new company, which replaces the Ethiopian Sugar Corporation, will manage existing refineries and push ahead with the construction of new factories, some of which have been stalled. The state hopes that ESIG will have better access to credit, for example for the purchase of machinery and spare parts.
